Cool Extinct Animals images

Check out these extinct animals images:

Kruger II
extinct animals
Elephants are large land mammals in two extant genera of the family Elephantidae: Elephas and Loxodonta, with the third genus Mammuthus extinct. Three species of elephant are generally recognized today: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant (also known as the Indian elephant). However, some researchers postulate the existence of a fourth species of elephant in West Africa. All other species and genera of Elephantidae are extinct. Most have been extinct since the last ice age, although dwarf forms of mammoths might have survived as late as 2,000 BCE. Elephants and other Elephantidae were once classified with other thick-skinned animals in a now invalid order, Pachydermata.

Elephants are the largest living land animals on Earth today. The elephant's gestation period is 22 months, the longest of any land animal. At birth, an elephant calf typically weighs 105 kilograms (230 lb). They typically live for 50 to 70 years, but the oldest recorded elephant lived for 82 years. The largest elephant ever recorded was shot in Angola in 1956. This male weighed about 24,000 lb (11,000 kg), with a shoulder height of 3.96 metres (13.0 ft), a metre (yard) taller than the average male African elephant. The smallest elephants, about the size of a calf or a large pig, were a prehistoric species that lived on the island of Crete during the Pleistocene epoch.

Elephants are a symbol of wisdom in Asian cultures and are famed for their memory and intelligence, where their intelligence level is thought to be equal to that of dolphins and primates. Aristotle once said the elephant was "the beast which passeth all others in wit and mind." The word "elephant" has its origins in the Greek ἐλέφας, meaning "ivory" or "elephant".

According to observations, healthy adult elephants have no natural predators,[19] although lions may take calves or weak individuals.[20][21] They are, however, threatened by human intrusion and poaching.

Lemonjello was buried in that ivy, and could barely see above it. Oranjello had left him in the dust. Tiny Lemonjello was plowing through the ivy as fast as he could, meowing distraughtly. Finally, Oranjello went up to him, and Lemonjello seemed relieved to be "rescued", now able to follow the beacon of Oranjello's HUGE TAIL.

Clint got this "super duct tape" (aka "military-grade duct tape" or "NASCAR tape" as the pool table people called it) at the Ranger Surplus Store in Tysons for /roll. THERE'S NO GOING BACK. This tape makes duct tape look like scotch tape. For the first time ever, the shelf in our fridge that keeps falling off every 6 months (with normal duct tape) is more or less permanently fixed (with super duct tape -- you can even open and close the fridge by grabbing the detatched shelf now!). I now consider normal duct tape only valid for temporarily situations -- like securing a bundle for transport. I don't think I'll ever look at normal duct tape the same way again. It's a cheap bastardization. It actually takes almost ALL my strength just to peel the tape, and I usually have to use scissors to cut it (I don't use scissors with normal duct tape). It sticks so hard that it's really hard to get off, if you mistakenly put it somewhere. This stuff is HARDCORE.

My wife and I visited Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah this week with her mother, her aunt, and her cousin. We volunteered to help with some of the daily caregiving and maintenance during the day and slept in guest cottages at night.

We had wanted to make this trip for some time, so it was really satisfying to finally see it. We've been contributing to the Best Friends Animal Society (The organization that operates the sanctuary) for years and have read stories about the sanctuary in their monthly magazine.

It's a 3,000+ acre tract of land known as Angel Canyon. The sanctuary is split up into sections for various animals but the bulk of the residents are cats and dogs. There are on average about 2,000 animals onsite everyday. They come to the sanctuary from rescues, shelters, pounds and anywhere else needy animals are found. The Society rescued hundreds of dogs in NOLA after Hurricane Katrina. They also look after the majority of the dogs that once belonged to Michael Vick. The animals are all free to live out the rest of their natural life at the sanctuary, but the staff try very hard to put every animal into a stable, loving home.

The whole area is breathtakingly beautiful and during our short visit we were lucky enough to drive through Zion National Park. We also spent some time in Pink Coral Sand Dunes State Park. I flew out of Las Vegas alone while my wife and her family spent another week together up in Salt Lake City.

The image above was taken from a small, hand-dug mine on a hillside near our cottage. It was likely made over a hundred years ago, but I can't recall what was being mined. These openings could be seen every so often on the rock faces in the area. This one overlooks the entrance to Angel Canyon.

Zebra

Some cool names for animals images:

Zebra
names for animals

______________________

Zebras are African equids best known for their distinctive white and black stripes. Their stripes come in different patterns unique to each individual. They are generally social animals and can be seen in small harems to large herds. In addition to their stripes, zebras have erect, mohawk-like manes. Unlike their closest relatives, horses and asses, zebras have never been truly domesticated.

There are three species of zebra: the Plains Zebra, Grévy's Zebra and the Mountain Zebra. The Plains zebra and the Mountain zebra belong to the subgenus Hippotigris, but Grevy's zebra is the sole species of subgenus Dolichohippus. The latter resembles an ass while the former two are more horse-like. Nevertheless, DNA and molecular data show that zebras do indeed have monophyletic origins. All three belong to the genus Equus along with other living equids. In certain regions of Kenya, Plains zebras and Grevy's zebras coexist.

The unique stripes and behaviors of zebras make these among the animals most familiar to people. They can be found in a variety of habitats, such as grasslands, savannas, woodlands, thorny scrublands, mountains and coastal hills. However, various anthropogenic factors have had a severe impact on zebra populations, in particular hunting for skins and habitat destruction. Grevy's zebra and the Mountain zebra are endangered. While Plains zebras are much more plentiful, one subspecies, the quagga, went extinct in the late nineteenth century.

The name "zebra" comes from the Old Portuguese word zevra which means "wild ass". The pronunciation is /ˈzɛbrə/ ZEB-rə or /ˈziːbrə/ ZEE-brə.

Named for the bear, an animal revered for its strength, invincibility, and resourcefulness, Chief Two Bears survived the Whitestone Massacre in which as many as 300 Sioux were killed. He was a brave warrior who fought in many battles including the Battle of Little Big Horn. Though he served as a translator and signed the Treaty of Fort Laramie, he believed in his people and their way of life. He strongly opposed selling land to the whites because he doubted their respect for the land and was convinced that the whites never made a treaty they wouldn’t break.

LEPRACHAUNS ARE NOT IRISH

LEPRACHAUNS ARE NOT IRISH
Some time back Ireland was derided as a land peopled by peasants, priests and pixies. Apart from the laudable alliteration it was an ugly stereotype spawned from an equally stereotypical English buffoon called Robert Kilroy-Silk. The quotation dates from 2002; yes that late – in a time when peasants were long gone, priests almost extinct and pixies were never part of Irish lore!

Yes, it may come as a surprise to most people but Irish mythology has no pixies or little fairies in it at all. We have giants, gods, heroes, pookas, banshees (and their male equicvalents; the shidhe) – but there were no leprechauns and certainly no little people. There is no doubt that Victorian Ireland was highly superstitious. Even today there are people who believe in ghosts and other spirits. However the Irish are no more superstitious than any other western nation. Leprechauns and other little people dancing comes from a romantic confusion caused by translating the Irish word Sidhe with the English word fairy.

The Sidhe were in fact a race of fully grown supernatural beings. Their existence goes back to Celtic religion and they were far from being friendly little people that sat on toadstools making shoes. Irish people didn’t wear shoes very often in the Victorian age. The Leprechaun is closer to the Germanic tradition as found in Shakespeare’s Mid-Summer Night’s Dream; ironically – it was the English that developed the idea of little people not the Irish. The Anglo-Irish writers of the so-called Celtic Twilight certainly adopted the imagery and Leprechaun culture goes back no further than the late nineteenth century.

The Sidhe (fairies) were a race of violent and dangerous people who did harm. The Beansidhe (lit; Woman Fairy) was an omen of death and her cry was the herald of the passing of another life. Her companions robbed children from their cradles in an early explanation of cot death. People who lost their reasoning were believed to have encountered these beings and the common expression “Tá sé imithe leis na Sidhe!” (he’s away with the fairies) describes a person who has lost the plot. It was believed that the encounter with the Sidhe was so terrible that it would drive a person insane.

These beings lived underground and the ancient portal tombs of Ireland were avoided as gates into their world. Farmers would not cross the hillocks or allow animals to graze them. Even to this day it is common to see a circle of stones and trees around a hillock in the middle of a field. The area is still fenced to stop animals wandering onto it. These ancient tombs lead some of us to believe that the Sidhe were the remnants of mythical races that lived in Ireland before the arrival of the Celts.

The Púca (Pooka) was a supernatural being who could change into other forms and travel at great speeds. The Púca was normally associated with black stallions but could appear in any form. His intention was to entice the person to travel with him but he didn’t necessarily harm them. Most Irish speakers translate the word púca as ghost. The ordinary Irish word for a ghost is taibhse.

The interchangeable use of the two words indicates that the appearance of the púca was normally the appearance of a dead person. That of itself might be frightening enough but apart from the fear factor the stories are simply common folklore. Ghost stories exist in every tradition and the púca, rather than the sidhe, are the ghosts of Irish folklore.

Giants and Heroes also played a large part in the mythology. The Fir-bolg were a legandery race of giants, the Red-Branch and Fianna were legendary warrior classes and the Tuatha de Danann were a legendary spiritual race that conquered Ireland in pre-history.

Formal education in nineteenth century Ireland was reserved to the wealthy land-owning classes. Naturally their peasants and servants were kept in ignorance and superstition is the handmaiden of ignorance. The superstitions of the common Irish were very much the butt of English humour through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Irish were presented as ignorant, backward and stupid. The advent of political correctness in the 1980s left many English comedians bereft of material. Visitors from the United States complained about the racialist (now racist) humour that was the mainstay of comedy in the BBC and ITN. With the odd exception of people such as Mr. Kilroy-Silk, the bulk of the British comedy establishment has long moved on from jokes about miserly Scots, stupid Irish, violent Germans, odorous Frenchmen and loud Americans. The origin of the idea of Irish backwardness had its roots in Victorian Britain and that is also where the idea of leprechauns comes from too.

There was one other type of nocturnal ne’er-do-well common in Irish lore. This was called a Toraí (Tory) and he was human rather than supernatural. The Tory was the kind of person who would burn your fields at night, or release your herds or do some other wanton damage. The Klu Klux Klan in the United States was a good example of a group of Tories. The name was applied as a term of insult for members of the Conservative Party – and the old saying goes, ”if the [pixie] cap fits; wear it!” and, the Conservatives weren’t offended at all, in fact they were quite proud of the adage and adopted it as their usual name.

I know that Bord Fáilte and most gift-shops won’t thank me for this but; the leprechaun souvenirs that were made in China are about as Irish as Hong Kong is!

But Hong Kong was British
And so were pixies!

Baron Cuvier and the cetaceans
extinct animals

The ground floor of Paris's "Museum of Comparative anatomy and Palaeontology".

Cuvier was the father of Palaeontology- the first scientist to study and name extinct species. He had a very big head- which led scientists to spend the better part of a century trying to find a correlation between brain size and intelligence. They couldn't.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges_Cuvier

"In my work on Fossil Bones, I set myself the task of identifying the animals whose fossilized remains fill the surface strata of the earth. This project meant I had to travel along a path where we had so far taken only a few tentative steps. As a new sort of antiquarian, I had to learn to restore these memorials to past upheavals and, at the same time, to decipher their meaning. I had to collect and put together in their original order the fragments which made up these animals, to reconstruct the ancient creatures to which these fragments belonged, to recreate their proportions and characteristics, and finally to compare them to those alive today on the surface of the earth. This was an almost unknown art, which assumed a science hardly touched upon up until now, that of the laws which govern the formal coexistence of the various parts in organic beings. Thus, I had to prepare myself for these studies through a much longer research into animals which presently exist. Only an almost universal review of present creation could provide some proof for my results concerning created life long ago. But at the same time such a study had to provide me with a large collection of equally demonstrable rules and interconnections. In the course of this exploration into a small part of the theory of the earth, I would have to be able to subject the entire animal kingdom in some way to new laws. "

From Cuvier's Introduction to his "Discourse on the Revolutionary Upheavals on the surface of the globe and on the changes which they have produced in the animal kingdom"

Thanks all! For you, here are the most Popular Pictures you dig from my stream. Thanks again!

I found this guy in some caves just outside of Kuala Lumpur. I've always wanted one for a pet because it is both eccentric and people might mistake me for a bond villain. I understand these can be house-trained even. Well, one of these can be house-trained and the other kind, that looks similar, is quite dangerous and the bacteria in his saliva can kill you. So, since I always get Gila Monsters and Iguanas confused, I never ended up getting one because I would hate to bring home the wrong thing.

This was a single-shot HDR. It really helped to bring out all the texture and color in the scales. It was shot at a low f-stop to keep the focus on the creature, rather than its surroundings.

I don't know if they have anything like 4-H in other countries. My mother is an avowed liar and told me as a girl that I couldn't join because I didn't have any siblings. This is, of couse, not true.

There is very little point being upset about the practical experience I missed out on, not to mention the valuable contacts that would be serving me now. The past is old and having no children of my own, I don't get an opinion on the matter.

Still, being an outsider of sorts in my second chosen profession, I can see now that 4-H fosters a sort of gang mentality among those who farm later in life. It's a hard crust to break through.

However, those farmers are getting old. Like the past, when they're gone, it'll be my turn.

Not a particularly interesting composition, but I really like the sign. Posting this is a reminder for me to return and create something more interesting at night here in DinoLand USA. I've been kind of busy lately to edit photos. Getting low on good images that are ready to post.

This photo is part of the 9/1/07 Kinship Circle alert [GULF COAST] Two Years And Still Counting.

PHOTO: Sidney reunited with his Bywater mom... An ARNO volunteer found Sidney -- lost in early 2007 when frightened by a lightening storm -- with a large tumor on his neck. We removed Sidney’s tumor. He was heartworm negative, so we knew he had a wonderful caretaker somewhere. We found his grateful mom through his microchip. Unemployed since Katrina, she’d just returned to work at Charity Hospital in the personnel department. She knew about the tumor, but had no money for veterinary care. For two years, she’s lived in a FEMA trailer parked outside her ruined home. Most of her time is spent gutting and cleaning her home on her own. Sidney’s mom is one of dozens we’ve helped who cannot afford care for their pet.

Right now, he's too darn skinny. Now think about, have you ever seen a skinny dashchund? Of course, not. Snoopy may be the only one ever. He just doesn't care too much, unless it's a corn dog, then he goes crazy.

Grand Canyon Nat. Park: Rock Squirrel 0253
photo of animals
The rock squirrel; the most dangerous animal in Grand Canyon National Park. Rock squirrels commonly bite visitors who are feeding them, or who are just holding their finger out towards them. Park rangers regularly tell visitors that squirrels are the most dangerous animal in the park because squirrel bites are so frequent.

Squirrels that are fed by people become dependent on human food, and may lose their natural fear of humans and their ability to forage for natural foods. There is a lot of truth to the saying, “a fed animal is a dead animal.” In addition to losing their foraging ability, animals that have been fed are less likely to survive other reasons. Animals that have been fed from cars congregate near roadways and are at a high risk of being killed by vehicle collisions.

There are other serious hazards associated with wildlife. Numerous species, including rodents, squirrels, coyotes, fox, bats, and mountain lions, may carry infectious diseases such as Hantavirus, rabies, or plague. In some situations, these diseases may be transmitted through simple contact, such as touching or feeding wildlife. In recent years, Hantavirus, rabies and plague all have been documented in the park’s wildlife populations. NPS photo by Michael Quinn
