Nestlé is a multinational packaged food company founded and headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland. It resulted from a merger in 1905 between the Anglo-Swiss Milk Company for milk products established in 1866 by the Page Brothers in Cham, Switzerland and the Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé Company set up in 1867 by Henri Nestlé to provide an infant food product. Several of Nestlé's brands are globally renowned, which made the company a global market leader in many product lines, including milk, chocolate, confectionery, bottled water, coffee, ice cream, food seasoning and pet foods.[1] The company stock is listed on the SWX Swiss Exchange. Some of Nestlé's business practices have been considered unethical, especially the manner in which infant formula has been marketed in developing countries, which led to the Nestlé boycott from 1977.

We spent 24 days travelling through the Czech Republic and Austria. This set is Vienna, Austria. Photos are tagged as to which day.

Day 12 - We started off by going to Schönbrunn Palace. This was our second time here and I can't express enough how great it is. Schönbrunn Palace and gardens is a former Habsburg imperial summer residence in Vienna. The grounds contain the palace, Gloriette, Palmenhaus, Dessert house, mazes, Roman ruins, English and French gardens, a carrage house (that contains many royal carrages), Egyptian Obelisk , an orangery and Tiergarten Schönbrunn (literally, Schönbrunn Zoo), the oldest zoo in the world. One of the most impressive sites I've been to. To really enjoy the entire site, you must take two days.

This spectacular “blue marble” image is the most detailed true-color image of the entire Earth to date. Using a collection of satellite-based observations, scientists and visualizers stitched together months of observations of the land surface, oceans, sea ice, and clouds into a seamless, true-color mosaic of every square kilometer (.386 square mile) of our planet. These images are freely available to educators, scientists, museums, and the public. This record includes preview images and links to full resolution versions up to 21,600 pixels across.

Much of the information contained in this image came from a single remote-sensing device-NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, or MODIS. Flying over 700 km above the Earth onboard the Terra satellite, MODIS provides an integrated tool for observing a variety of terrestrial, oceanic, and atmospheric features of the Earth. The land and coastal ocean portions of these images are based on surface observations collected from June through September 2001 and combined, or composited, every eight days to compensate for clouds that might block the sensor’s view of the surface on any single day. Two different types of ocean data were used in these images: shallow water true color data, and global ocean color (or chlorophyll) data. Topographic shading is based on the GTOPO 30 elevation dataset compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey’s EROS Data Center. MODIS observations of polar sea ice were combined with observations of Antarctica made by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s AVHRR sensor—the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer. The cloud image is a composite of two days of imagery collected in visible light wavelengths and a third day of thermal infra-red imagery over the poles. Global city lights, derived from 9 months of observations from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, are superimposed on a darkened land surface map.

Abandoned donkey Bobby now has a sanctuary for life
animals for free
Image by Donkey Sanctuary Press Images
A donkey thought to be in his thirties called Bobby who was found abandoned in a field in Northern Ireland now has a sanctuary for life after being rescued by international animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary.

Welfare officers in County Antrim were alerted to the plight of the abandoned animal when a farmer called concerned about an elderly, underweight donkey with hooves in need of a trim that had been left in his field. Unusually, the donkey had a note attached to his head collar saying that his name was Bobby.

Luckily for Bobby, the farmer who owned the field had previously kept horses, and so had sufficient equine experience to be able to care for Bobby until welfare officers from The Donkey Sanctuary came to collect him. Under the expert care of staff from The Donkey Sanctuary he now has a roof over his head, trimmed hooves and a secure supply of food and water.

Allen Andrews, The Donkey Sanctuary’s regional welfare officer for Northern Ireland, was involved in Bobby’s rescue: “When I first heard about Bobby I was saddened to learn of another donkey adding to the numbers that are being reported as abandoned in Northern Ireland at the moment. The unusual thing with this case, and something that I have never come across before, is that Bobby had been left with a name tag on his collar. The fact that Bobby had also been left on the land of someone with equine experience suggests to me that this may have been a reluctant abandonment.

“In these difficult financial times, the cost of keeping donkeys means that for some they have become an unaffordable luxury. We may never know the reasons why Bobby was abandoned, but luckily for him, his story ends happily. He can now enjoy his later years safe in the knowledge that he has a sanctuary for life and need never be hungry or homeless again.”

To report neglect or mistreatment of donkeys, or for free, expert advice for anyone experiencing difficulties in caring for their donkeys, the Sanctuary’s regional welfare officer for Northern Ireland, Allen Andrews, can be contacted on 07717 814946.

All of the donkeys taken in, including Bobby, now have a sanctuary for life with The Donkey Sanctuary. The charity is funded entirely by donations and takes in an average of eight donkeys each week throughout the UK and Ireland. Please visit www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk for more information.

About The Donkey Sanctuary
International animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary was founded by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen M.B.E. in 1969 and aims to protect donkeys and mules and promote their welfare worldwide.

The Donkey Sanctuary supports projects to relieve the suffering of donkeys in 29 countries worldwide, including sanctuaries across Europe, where more than 14,500 donkeys and mules have been cared for, and major projects in Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Kenya and Mexico, where donkey welfare is improved through community education and veterinary work.

Any donation, no matter how small, is gratefully received by The Donkey Sanctuary and one of the best ways to support the charity into the future is to give regularly by direct debit.

CRITICALLY ENDANGERED (IUCN Red List of Threatened Species). There is currently thought to be between 1300 and 2000 individuals left in the wild. The species exhibits sexual dimorphism: the male is almost completely black, but sometimes with white or buff cheeks, while the female is a golden or buff colour with variable black patches, including a black streak on the head.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_crested_gibbon

The Endangered Primate Rescue Center (EPRC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation, breeding, research, and conservation of endangered primates, and to the protection of their habitats.

The overall goal of the EPRC is the establishment of stable populations of highly endangered primate species in captivity as a source for reintroduction programs.

The EPRC is home to about 150 primates in 15 taxa (species and subspecies), - many of which are critically endangered - including six species which are kept only at the EPRC and in no other facility in the world.

All of the animals at the EPRC, except for those bred in captivity, are victims of poaching and the illegal animal trade. Nine primate species have bred at the center and a total of more than 100 infants have been born, some of them being the first ever of their species to be born in captivity.

The primates are kept in more than 50 large enclosures and in two electrically fenced semi-wild areas of primary forest which are 2 ha and 5 ha. These semi-wild enclosures are the first steps towards its ambitious goal of reintroducing the primates to their natural habitat Langurs and gibbons have been released into these areas and have been successfully maintained there for several years. The center employs 20 Vietnamese people as animal keepers.

To support the reintroduction of highly endangered species, the EPRC also works to preserve and protect their natural habitats. They have worked closely with the Management Board of Van Long Nature Reserve, located close by, to successfully prepare the reserve for the successful reintroduction of the Delacour’s langur. Other successful reintroduction programs have taken place or are planned.

Rhino Encounter - NOW FIXED & SMALLER FILE!

The orig file I posted this morning (in a rush on my way to work) was 58mg and took forever to load, for those who could even get it to start loading. I apologize, I wasn't paying attention and have re-saved the file optimized for flickr and it loads fine. PLEASE try it again, I promise it will be worth it!

This was taken Tuesday night during a docent training class that I was sitting in on to get continuing education hours. I know the video quality is low, but it was taken on my cruddy phone using the night mode. It's only 90 seconds and you get a glimpse of a few remarkable creatures from a perspective not many see.

Many of you know about my volunteer work as a docent with our local zoo, but most of the work you hear about is done off the grounds at events, schools and similar situations using the education animals. We are also trained on the exhibit animals, tours, events and such on zoo grounds.

Not many people have the opportunity to interact with a critically endangered species like the Black Rhino's, especially in a controlled environment with minimal risk of serious injury. I stress this because I don't want people to think these are docile or tame animals, they can be very aggressive and unpredictable. This is part of the indoor nonpublic areas that the Rhinos spend their winter safely in. The building was designed specifically to house 2 adults, you only see a small bit in the video, but there are permanent barriers and a variety of hydraulic gates. Mobile gates give keepers flexibility to allow the animals to rotate pens, and reconfigure pen layout so they can access all areas as needed while always having a safety barrier between humans and animals.

I added a couple big cat clips at at the end, the female Snow Leopard, and 2 of the three Amur Tiger cubs born at our zoo in Sept of 2011. All three species shown in my videos have one thing in common, they are all critically endangered species, and are all part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP).

Long standing Harpy couple.

With weights reaching 18 pounds, a wingspan of more than six feet, and a healthy diet of mammals including sloths and monkeys, the world's largest eagle is often referred to as the "flying wolf." Harpy Eagles are becoming increasingly rare in the wild, but Guyana still provides a refuge for this endangered species. In fact, Guyana's relatively large population of Harpy Eagles caught the attention of National Geographic who filmed the documentary, Flight of the Harpy Eagle in Guyana.
