The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a large-sized feline (family Felidae) inhabiting most of Africa and parts of the Middle East. The cheetah is the only extant member of the genus Acinonyx, most notable for modifications in the species' paws. As such, it is the only felid with non-retractable claws and pads that, by their scope, disallow gripping (therefore cheetah cannot climb vertical trees, although they are generally capable of reaching easily accessible branches). The cheetah, however, achieves by far the fastest land speed of any living animal—between 112 and 120 km/h (70 and 75 mph) in short bursts covering distances up to 500 m (1,600 ft), and has the ability to accelerate from 0 to over 100 km/h (62 mph) in three seconds.

The lion is one of the four big cats in the genus Panthera, and a member of the family Felidae. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia with an endangered remnant population in Gir Forest National Park in India, having disappeared from North Africa and Southwest Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene, about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. They were found in most of Africa, across Eurasia from western Europe to India, and in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru. The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of thirty to fifty percent over the past two decades in its African range. teaching oppression: false categories

the labels read farm animals, wild animals, animal series (with different modes, collect them all!). these categories allow us to treat the same animal differently, depending on what role we humans have assigned to him or her. is she's a farm animal we can do anything we want to her, including lifelong torture followed by slaughter. if he's a wild animal we can hunt him, but if there are too few of him, we call him endangered and may even force breeding (perhaps in a zoo) to get his population back up to where we can hunt him again. if she's a pet she's still property but you can love her and if you're too cruel to her your neighbors might call the authorities on you. if she's an experimental subject the sky's the limit, as long as you get approvals first. toys like these allow us to teach these arbitrary categories to children, using animals we've agreed symbolically represent each category. (dogs might be problematic, since some cultures call them farmable food products and some cultures call them "man's best friend" while simultaneously cutting them up in laboratories and forcing them to perform tricks and pull sleds and.... well, you get the idea.)

The scientific name "Lycaon pictus" is derived from the Greek for "wolf" and the Latin for "painted". It is the only canid species to lack dewclaws on the forelimbs.

Adults typically weigh 18–34 kilograms (40–75 lb).[2] A tall, lean animal, it stands about 75 centimetres (30 in) at the shoulder, with a head and body length averaging about 100 centimetres (39 in) long with a tail of 30 to 45 centimetres (12 to 18 in). This species has suffered an extremely rapid population reduction in the recent past which is likely to continue into the near future, probably largely as a result of feeding on carcasses of animals treated with the veterinary drug diclofenac, perhaps in combination with other causes. For this reason it is classified as Critically Endangered.

No matter where they stand in the animal kingdom, kids are all the same!

I was taking some fun photos of Menari, a Sumatran orangutan. In this shot she is zoning in on her dad. A split second after I took this she leaped on top of her sleeping dad's head and started attacking him playfully. He was not amused!! If this expression doesn't show intelligence and premeditation I don't know what does. Regardless of species, kids are all the same HA HA

This little darling is a female juvenile orangutan named Menari. She was born at Audobon Zoo in 2009. She is an Sumatran orangutan, a species that is endangered in its Indonesian homeland.

Orangutans are the only exclusively Asian genus of extant great ape. The largest living arboreal animals, they have proportionally longer arms than the other, more terrestrial, great apes. They are among the most intelligent primates and use a variety of sophisticated tools, also making sleeping nests each night from branches and foliage. Their hair is typically reddish-brown, instead of the brown or black hair typical of other great apes.

Visayan Warty Pig (Sus cebifrons)

The Visayan Warty Pig (Sus cebifrons) is a critically endangered species of pig. The Visayan warty pig is endemic to two of the Visayan Islands in the central Philippines, and is threatened by habitat loss, food shortages and hunting - these are the leading causes of the Visayan Warty Pig's status as critically endangered.

This animal is from the San Diego Zoo, one of the few zoos that have successfully bred this species.

The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is a moderately large cat native to the mountain ranges of South Asia and Central Asia. Snow leopards have long thick fur, and their base color varies from smoky gray to yellowish tan, with whitish underparts. They have dark gray to black open rosettes on their body with small spots of the same color on their heads and larger spots on their legs and tail. Unusually among cats, their eyes are pale green or gray in color.It is listed as an Endangered animal.

One of Kyiv’s most architecturally unique buildings is empty and decaying and likely to stay that way. The “Knight’s House” at Yaroslaviv Val 1, a phantasmagoria of mediaeval motifs including a castle tower and gargoyles – has been vacant for almost 10 years since its former communal apartments were dissolved and the building privatized.

“This is a gem of Kyiv’s architecture,” explains art historian and conservationist Natalia Musiyenko. “It was originally a luxury apartment block with splendid interiors, built at the end of the 19th century by Nikolai Dobachevsky, but it is suffering from criminal neglect.”

Sadly, there's little incentive for owners to fix up these historic properties. Since there is no property tax in Kiev, once someone owns a building, there is no additional cost to letting it sit vacant. Fixing historic buildings is costly; letting it fall down and selling the property to developers is profitable.

And there's probably a lot less bureaucracy to deal with when building on vacant land too.

Ahh, profit motive and bureaucracy. They rear their ugly heads again...
