Changing things up a bit with this one. My cool and totally awesome niece has worked for the Oregon Zoo since 2004. She was gracious enough to give me a private tour of the area she works which is the Trillium Creek Family Farm located towards the north end of the zoo. After my tour ended I wandered around for a while. It was cold and raining so I was surprised to see a lot of the animals out and in view.

The zoo owns five Caracals: mom, dad, and three babies. Here is dad. His name is Cricket. Not quite as sociable as the rest of the animals Mr. Cricket thought he was well hidden in the very back behind some tall grass and a large rock. Luckily there was an even bigger rock on the outside that I could stand on. I had only one small opening through which I could reach him. Utilizing my 100-400 zoom I waited until he looked at me.

Ain’t he gorgeous?

Red Wolf (Canis rufus)
names for animals
The red wolf is one of two species of wolves in North America, the other being the gray wolf, Canis lupus. As their name suggests, red wolves are known for the characteristic reddish color of their fur most apparent behind the ears and along the neck and legs, but are mostly brown and buff colored with some black along their backs. Intermediate in size to gray wolves and coyotes, the average adult red wolf weighs 45-80 pounds, stands about 26 inches at the shoulder and is about 4 feet long from the tip of the nose to the end of the tail.

The red wolf is one of the world’s most endangered wild canids. Once common throughout the southeastern United States, red wolf populations were decimated by the 1960s due to intensive predator control programs and loss of habitat. A remnant population of red wolves was found along the Gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana. After being declared an endangered species in 1973, efforts were initiated to locate and capture as many wild red wolves as possible. Of the 17 remaining wolves captured by biologists, 14 became the founders of a successful captive breeding program. Consequently, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service declared red wolves extinct in the wild in 1980.

Over 100 red wolves roam their native habitats in five northeastern North Carolina counties and approximately 200 comprise the Species Survival Plan captive breeding program in sites across the United States.

In 2010, Miller Park Zoo was of only a handful of zoos in the U.S. that successfully bred pups. In fact, the zoo had 4 pups born in 2010 and all survived. The zoo is currently home to 6 red wolves with hopes of breeding to take place in the spring.

Iguana
names for animals
Iguana is a herbivorous genus of lizard native to tropical areas of Central America and the Caribbean. The genus was first described in 1768 by Austrian naturalist Josephus Nicolaus Laurenti in his book Specimen Medicum, Exhibens Synopsin Reptilium Emendatam cum Experimentis circa Venena. Two species are included in the genus Iguana: the Green Iguana, which is widespread throughout its range and a popular pet, and the Lesser Antillean Iguana, which is endemic to the Lesser Antilles and endangered due to habitat destruction.

The word "iguana" is derived from a Spanish form of the original Taino name for the species "Iwana".

Anyone can come in contact with a goat of the storefront. I feel sense of incongruity for a name called "the egg of goat", but in fact, it is the name of the cakes.

It is made based on a lemon cake. The cloth of the cake mixes the goat's milk and the goat's cheese, and the surface is coated with white chocolate.

House with Chimeras, Kiev
names for animals
Image by Matt. Create. (formerly Roads Less Traveled)
House with Chimaeras or Gorodetsky House (Ukrainian: Будинок з химерами; translit. Budynok z khymeramy, Russian: Дом с химерами, translit. Dom s khimerami) is an Art Nouveau building in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. Originally an upmarket apartment building, it was built in the period of 1901–1902 by noted architect Vladislav Gorodetsky, who was regarded as the Gaudí of Kiev.

Situated on No. 10, Bankova Street, across from the President of Ukraine's office in the historic Pechersk neighbourhood, the building has been used since 2005 as a presidential residence for official and diplomatic ceremonies.

The "House with Chimaeras" derives its popular name from its ornate decorations depicting various scenes of exotic animals and hunting scenes, which were added because Gorodetsky was an avid hunter. The name does not refer to the chimaera of mythology, but to an architectural style known as Chimaera decoration in which animal figures are applied as decorative elements to a building.

Hamadryas Baboon
names for animals
Wellington Zoo
New Zealand

The Hamadryas baboon (Papio hamadryas) is a species of baboon from the Old World monkey family. It is the northernmost of all the baboons; being native to the Horn of Africa and the southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. These regions provide habitats with the advantage for this species of fewer natural predators than central or southern Africa where other baboons reside. The Hamadryas baboon was a sacred animal to the ancient Egyptians and appears in various roles in ancient Egyptian religion, hence its alternative name of 'sacred baboon'.

Snapping Turtle
names for animals
We saw this huge snapping turtle while canoeing in the Rockwood conservation area (see it large on black).

It was foolish of us to get so close to it, but it looked so peaceful and not worried about our presence.

"As the name suggests, this is one turtle that commands respect. When disturbed, it does not hesitate to defend itself, but will strike with amazing speed and force. Because it is a large animal, its powerful jaws are capable of tearing flesh quite badly.
Why doesn't the snapping turtle protect itself by simply hiding in its shell?
For good reason; it simply cannot fit! "
This information is from this site.

You can also read about snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) in Wikipedia.

I added another photo of the turtle next to the canoe to give a perspective on its size.

Heat of the Moment
names for animals
Asia in Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom at night is something of a rare sight. The park used to close around sunset, with the exception of some extra hours for hotel guests on Disney property. However, there seems to be some fresh thinking happening at Animal Kingdom. Someone realized there are other things to do there besides visit the animals. It turns out the park is actually quite beautiful at night.

That’s why I was having a wonderful time taking photos. It was new. It was beautiful. I had a new Nikon 14-24mm lens that I’d just bought. Life was grand! Then some girl named Angie came up to me and said I had to stop taking pictures because I had a “big” camera. She said it would be alright if I had a “little” camera. It totally ruined my night. There I was in the heat of the moment, finding one beautiful scene after another, only to get shot down by the man – or, in this case, a short woman.

They have a saying at Walt Disney World – Have a magical day! Maybe she lost her pixie dust.

They have a slender snout used for catching prey, hence their name. Their diet consists of mainly fish, snakes, amphibians and crustaceans. African Giraffe
names for animals
The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an African even-toed ungulate mammal, the tallest of all land-living animal species, and the largest ruminant. The giraffe's scientific name, which is similar to its antiquated English name of camelopard, refers to its irregular patches of color on a light background, which bear a token resemblance to a leopard's spots. The average mass for an adult male giraffe is 1,200 kilograms (2,600 lb) while the average mass for an adult female is 830 kilograms (1,800 lb). It is approximately 4.3 metres (14 ft) to 5.2 metres (17 ft) tall, although the tallest male recorded stood almost 6 metres (20 ft).

Glum Ninja C.P.F. - Kenta the Jovial

Currently availiable on Etsy

Glum Ninjas C.P.F. is a covert protection force for people who want inconspicuous protection. They disguise themselves as run-of-the-mill stuffed animals and keep a watchful eye, waiting to spring into action at the first sign of danger.

Glum Ninjas are around 8 inches tall by about 7.5 inches wide and are ok for gentle play but they are made of felt which will give way if treated too roughly so they are probably more suited for collectors and plush-a-holics rather than small children.(some toys are too cool for kids) All Glum Ninjas are named, cataloged and come with an authentic Glum Ninja coin that identifies them.

it's strange volunteering at an animal refuge how different people bond with different animals - and also how those animals bond with the volunteers. i noticed that there were definite favourites that existed between the two: the vet had a dog called swiss, a dutch volunteer a dog called pecky, another dutch volunteer a capuchin called luna, a canadian volunteer a parakeet called mr bean and me, well i had martin. for some reason i never got that close to the spider monkeys. there were about 10 of them in total, but i never managed to learn their names or really distinguish one from the others. i'm not sure why that was - as they were still really cool creatures - but there wasn't really a strong connection. what did impress me was they way that they moved, their tails were literally like a fifth limb and they were experts at judging the strength of each branch and leaping from one to another. this one was in a playful mood and bounced up and down above my head posing for the camera.

Turtles are not the most exciting animal to capture on video (unless they're having sex). However, Oranjello may beg to differ.

BACKSTORY: Carolyn found a turtle -- right where we turn around in the chute to get out of our driveway. He surely would have been crushed had she not noticed, as he was not walking. He had dug a little hole and was kind of hanging out in it. So we took him inside for a photo shoot with the cat, named him Timmy The Turtle (after a NoFX song), and kept him in our bathtub for 3 days. Why? I don't know. Just for the novelty of it. Later, we released him by the creek in our back yard.

Another interesting thing about this turtle is that he barely fit in his shell. When his head went in, his tail would stick out; and vice-versa.
