Feeding Frenzy

A frenzy of newborn roachlets pours in to devour the leftover ootheca that mom has expelled for their first meal. Nothing like some tasty internally-carried used egg-casing to jumpstart your new life, mmmm. This shot contains mostly males, which are flat and wide compared to the more tube-shaped females.

Two Tanzanian red-legged millipedes, Epibolus pulchripes. Males in this species are shiny (left), while females are dull (right). It's a case of obvious sexual dimorphism that's not common in millipedes.

I realize I sort of dropped off the face of the earth for a while, but I haven't stopped improving my photography! Piper and I visited a triangle of trees that kept dropping petals. It looked like it was snowing, in a way. I had her sit in front of one of the trees so I could get this photo.

Motif:
This is a mayfly (thanks to welakawombat & DJ1 for identifying it), it is still sitting on the wall of our anteroom - and this for more than 2 weeks. It isn't leaving it's position. I wonder what this little creature lives from - maybe from air and love - the point is, where does it get the love from. Strange enough, the German name is Eintagsfliege which literally translates to one-day-fly, talking of the lifespan of this insect. Funny how long it was sitting there - maybe it was dead then. When I took the picture it was alive however because I unintentionally chased it a few meters by taking the pictures.
It is a very intersting insect and especially the face of it is awesome. You have to look at the large or even original size to get this sensation of the WOW-effect when looking at the face.
Technical:
Taken with a Canon EOS 350D (Rebel XT) and the EF-S 60 mm Macro. Additional flash supplied by a Speedlite 430 EZ softened with a selfmade softbox to avoid flash reflects. The picture is a 1:1 representation of the little insect. The aperture f/13 was enough to bring out every detail of this insect. I'm utterly proud on the wings - they came out just perfect.

Red River Hog and Piglet

Downright little beauties, these hogs. Aside from that, those who aren’t exactly red (really sort of orange) might lean toward a gray color. The bony features on the face of a boar offer some protection during face-to-face combat with a potential rival for the affections of his lovely sow. The pointed ears with tufts of flowing hair at the tips add to the charm of these small pigs. As with many animals, scent glands are present in several areas. Those glands in their feet and lips leave scent marks as the pigs move through their habitat. The Red River Hog (Potamochoerus porcus), also known as Bush Pig (but not to be confused with P. larvatus, common name "Bushpig"), is a wild member of the pig family that lives in the rainforests, mountains and brushes of Africa.
Adults weigh up to 200 lb and stand 0.6-0.75 m. The fur is reddish-brown, with black legs and black and white snout along the top, a white stripe goes end to end on the spine. They live in herds of 6-20 members, led by the strongest boar. Typically, 3-6 piglets are born at a time.
Red River Hogs eat grass, berries, roots, insects, mollusca, little vertebrates and carrion. They are capable of causing damage to plantations.
Guru Maitriyogin and the dog's pain

There is a story that one day, when Maitriyogin was teaching, a dog barked at someone, who, losing his temper, threw a stone at it. The dog was hit in the ribs and yelped. Feeling great sorrow for the animal, the teacher cried out and fell down from the throne. ‘This is taking things a bit too far,’ thought his disciples. Knowing what was in their minds, Maitriyogin said, look here, at my ribs.’ And on his body, exactly where the stone had hit the dog, he had a bruise. He had taken the suffering of the animal upon himself.

TOROSAURUS LATUS

"Pierced Lizard"
Up to eight feet in length, the skull of the Cretaceous dinosaur Torosaurus is one of the longest known skulls of any land animal, living or extinct. Like its contemporary Triceratops, Torosaurus had horns above its eyes and nostrils and a bony frill covering its neck region. These horns, comparable to those of modern-day rhinos, may have been used for defense against predators , in competition for mates, and -- along with the imposing frill -- for display to members of their own kind.
