Despite its name, the Irish Elk is neither an elk nor is it exclusively Irish. In fact, it is the largest known deer that ever lived. Although its lived in parts of Eurasia and North Africa, it is known by numerous remains found in Ireland.

The antlers of male Irish Elk are larger than any others in the deer family. These massive structures could reach a span of 12 feet (3.6 meters) and weigh over 100 pounds (45 kilograms). They probably mainly functioned as a display for attracting mates and for intimidating rival males. The antlers were shed and re-grown annually.

This animal became extinct about 11,000 years ago as climatic change eliminated the vegetation it depended on for food.
