These were the surprise stars of our visit to the zoo -- me and my two wildlife-loving cousins were all impressed. The coats of these peccaries shimmered in the sun with a silvery sheen. They are native to Bolivia and Paraguay where they are called tagua, and Gran Chaco or Gran peccory -- both of which mean giant peccary -- as they are the largest of all living peccaries.

From Wikipedia:
"The Chacoan peccary has the unusual distinction of having been first described in 1930 based on fossils and was originally thought to be an extinct species. In 1975 the animal was discovered to still be alive and well in the Chaco region of Paraguay. The species was well known to the native people, but it took a while for scientists to rediscover its existence."

Moral of the story -- scientists should talk more to native people!
